Ministry of Social Affairs of the Republic of Estonia. The area of government of the Ministry of Social Affairs includes the drafting and implementation of plans to resolve social issues, the management of public health, protection and medical care, employment, the labour market and working environment, social security, social insurance and social welfare, promotion of gender equality and the preparation of corresponding draft legislation. The Minister of Social Affairs holds overall responsibility for coordinating the Government policy for gender equality.
The Gender Equality Bureau, established in 1996 within the Ministry of Social Affairs, assists the Minister in coordinating the government’s policy on gender equality. Its tasks include the promotion of gender equality, monitoring of the legislative process in terms of gender impact, preparation of national gender promotion action plans. Efficient fulfilment of the above tasks presuppose existence of a sound knowledge base and availability of methods, tools and skills in the field of gender equality.
