Supported by Community Framework Strategy on Gender Equality (2001 – 2005), Ministry of Welfare of the Republic of Latvia organizes an international conference “Mass Media in (Re)Distribution of Power”. The event will be held in Riga, Latvia, from January 12 – 14, 2005.

Conference organizers have set several tasks:

  • To present research studies on gender stereotypes in media and governance and evaluate their influence on opportunities of both genders to enter decision-making positions in politics (Latvian, Estonian, Danish, and Italian situation).
  • To facilitate discussions about existing gender stereotypes, especially among media professionals, political decision-makers and PR/advertising experts.
  • To provide a venue for exchanging best practices and experience of other EU countries.

The conference is the closing activity of an international project “Mass Media in (Re)Distribution of Power”, that seeks to promote gender balanced participation at national and European level and, by changing existing stereotypes, to reach a situation when both men and women are motivated and enjoy equal opportunities to participate in decision-making on issues important for the whole society.

Project partners are the Danish Research Centre on Gender Equality, Estonian Ministry of Social Affairs, Giacomo Brodolini Foundation of Italy.
